Subject: Srtaight combing canola and oats(pics)

Saskatchewan

We tried straight combining a 1/4 of canola this year. Sprayed it with pod-ceal about 3 weeks ago. The pod-ceal did seem to work. The area that was sprayed there was 0 shattering, either before or during combining. Without the spray there was minimal shattering, maybe 1%. Mostly the pod-ceal seemed to keep it from shattering when the reel touched it. On the picture of the canola the one darker one is the one we straight cut and the other is the one we swathed.

Once it was all said and done I don't know if I would do it again for a couple of reasons. First it was slow going, we had to drive a 1/2 mile an hour slower. Secondly there where was the odd canola plant that was grass green yet, either due to poor germination or a hybrid parent coming out. Third, I was a nervous wreck with all the hail around, it would of been much easier on me if it was in a swath. But it was a much nicer canola sample.

The last set of pics is us just straight combining our oats and bagging them.
