Subject: setting planter downpressure

Without a high tech monitor, like the 20/20, how do I know how much row unit down pressure to run on the planter?

I'm planting into 100% conventional tilled fields that can get pretty soft after the field cultivator pass. How do I know if the downpressure is correct? Mostly, how can I tell if downpressure is excessive?

We're running a JD 7200 with standard DP springs, but have a new 1250 planter on the way (but, not sure if it's going to get here in time!!!)

Thanks.
