Subject: Weaning calves on silage and DDG?

Baldwin City, KS
I am getting ready to wean some calves off of my killer cows. I estimate the weight to range from 300-450. The calves have been coming to the bunk and eating a little with the cows, which is corn silage and DDG. I was going to get some starter ration, but the salesman that I get my DDG through said I should be able to wean them with DDG and a little silage since they are used to it. My neighbor disagrees with this and thinks that the calves won't be able to utilize the silage very well at this age.
What do you guys think? I would like to get the calves off of these cows pretty quick so they can put on a little more flesh for the salebarn. Thanks.
