I have a Doyle, but I don't have it set up for variable rate. It could be that the hydraulic motor doesn't have as much torque at a low speed or that the tractor hydraulics are slow to respond at that low of flow.

I had a similar problem with my hydraulic drive planter when using a CIH 215 Magnum. If my population was less than 30k, the spacing was terrible due to jerky hydraulics. Over 30k, it was fine. The solution that CIH offered was to change to seed plates with less holes so that the motor would have to turn faster to get the desired population. I traded for a Versatile 280 and the spacing issues went away...

You could make the gate narrower by blocking an inch on each side. The chain would need to move faster to spread the same amount.
