You need the correct DJi app and then the firmware on the drone, controller and the app all need to be from the same timeframe.
It can be a minefield, some combinations won't link up properly if at all.
I do still have one but not used it since Mavic came out and to be honest don't remember that much about updating except you did it by the SD card which was always a little scary.  

While it was good in its day I wouldn't spend too much time on it when the Mavic Mini2 can run rings round it and is not a lot of money.
They are relatively crude and noisy old things but the first one they did with decent video and stills quality and really good range - beyond what the battery could support to get you out and back.
