Subject: Two Person Drone Operation

Dallas Center IA 515-720-2463
There has been several times in my five years of fooling with drones that I have been asked to take a look at something, most often a crop field.
So the two of us go and do the flight. I am operating the drone and have a good view of the I-Pad screen.
While the other person cannot really see the camera view on the I-Pad.
So have to wait until the pictures are downloaded, to view on a laptop.

A couple weeks ago a friend and I were taking a second look at his re-planted drowned out ponds.
He was standing to my left. I took the I-Pad out of the holder on the controller and handed it to him so he could see what was on the screen.

He said this is much better.

The only problem was we were pretty close - Not good Social Distancing.

So figured there had to be a better way - A longer controller to I-Pad connecting cable.

Next I did some looking. There are a lot of longer cables. But kind of hard to figure out.
Different cable ends. As the regular, Lighting for Apple products, the type C, one that Garmin uses, others.
Many have the common USB plug in at one end, other end type A, Lighting or type C.
Some looked to have the same male at both ends.

But I did find what I felt was right. 6’ long, looked like type C female at one end, type C male at the other.
Ordered one, figured if not what I wanted just throw in with the other stuff in the old or junk box.

Got it yesterday. Was right, one male C end and the other female C.

First did a in house test. Worked.

Out to the friends. Set up in shade of his machine shed. In chairs about 6’ apart.

First I showed him how to run the camera. Switch from video to still pictures.
Explained gimbal angle.

Also pointed out some things I may be asking him.
Height, distance from home point, the gimbal angle deal.
Percent of battery and estimated flight time remaining.
How to switch the screen between camera view and the map.
Which way the arrowhead deal said the aircraft is pointing.

Also how to tell me what to do with the aircraft.
Forward and back. Move left and right. Up or down. Rotate aircraft to the left or right. Gimbal angle.

Then a ‘Practice’ flight. Aircraft right in front of us, close to the ground, always in easy view.

Next on out a few hundred feet. Beyond easy to see with the eye.
Pretty soon we were working together much better than at first.

Then a longer flight. He was very happy to be able to clearly see the screen, Very.
And to take pictures of what he wanted.

I feel with some more practice we will get pretty decent at it.

Not having a screen is OK, as long as not close to anything. The ground, trees, buildings.
If I need to see the screen, he would turn it so I could see.

When the ‘Low battery, return to home’ deal came on, he figured out what button to push. Also stop the decent when I asked him to.

Note: I say I-Pad for the device. But on this drone I am using a Samsung table, but I call it a I-Pad.

Top picture is the setup in the house. On the left the Samsung tablet.
The controller is to the right.
The regular controller to display cable is plugged into the controller on it’s left side.
Then hooks to the extension cable, female end.
Extension cable is hanging down below my damnputor room table.
Then is plugged into the Samsung on it’s left side.

Second picture is from the first test flight.
I am in the chair to the left with the controller.
Bud is in the middle chair with the display screen Samsung.
Mrs Barton is to the right.
