Agent Orange: Friendly fire that keeps on burning.

I don't know if it's all the Ipads or just those in the last 4 years or so but just any cable won't consistently work. Since the cable is transmitting data to and from the controller, it needs to have the proprietary chip embedded in the Ipad end. Since it's proprietary, it's considerably more expensive than it would be otherwise.
Further, to answer Lowell's question of which is best, bear in mind that only Ipads with cellular capability will have real GPS. WiFi only ones just use location data provided by any nearby WiFi hot spots. They work, kinda sorta in areas with hot spots but once out in the weeds, location data goes a long time between updates to position. With no location data provided to the controller, several of the smart modes the drone is capable of, are no longer available.
And then, we have the issue of display brightness in full sun. Smart phone and tablet displays are not very good at being continuously on, at full brightness (which is oftentimes not bright enough anyways). They can get very warm and also sap battery life, which can cause the device to shut down while you drone is in mid flight.
