Grabill, Indiana | I have been searching for resources to help determine how to setup a crop share lease for Alfalfa ground. Unfortunately there is not much information easily available so I thought I'd someone in the Extension Service a call for some local advice. I was sorely disappointed with the answers I received.
He answer to what I should use as guides for a crop share on hay was: "Do what works best for you". After a couple of follow-up questions it was obvious he had no knowledge that would help me.
The one that really sent me for a spin was his comments on cash rents for hay ground. He stated that cash rent for alfalfa should be much less than for corn or soybeans. I stated we planned to rent ground that was already in row crop production and was good ground for our area. He said it didn't matter, alfalfa rents were lower. Just wait until I run to my potential landlords with this information.................
Do any of you have advice on share cropping on hay ground starting from planting?
