If it is a stern drive--in other words an inboard/outboard, then you need at least 250 if you are going to pull skiers or wakeboarders. If you have 220lb teenagers like I do, you better go much higher than that (300 hp). If you are just pulling kids on tubes or cruising the lake, much less is needed.

If it is an outboard, then you need 140 to pull serious skiers, 85 if you are cruising around or pulling tubers.

My inboard ski boat has a Mercruiser MPI 454 with 395hp and we use everyone of those ponies with my teenagers. I have never regretted paying a little extra for the extra hp. It is a lot like tractors. You end up using every hp you get--and always regret you didn't get more.
