Subject: Re: using truck frames for wagons

Near-north Ontario, French River
Every one Ive ever seen has been built with a fifth wheel set up on the front. Cut the frame to the appropriate length, Notch it , and bend inward to form an "A"frame . Fab up a "King Pin" and fifth wheel plate and your good to go. Try to avoid using the automotive type steering ( vs a fifth wheel style set up) if at all possible. Things will pull straighter and wandering will be non existant with a fifth wheel style set up. Ive posted some pics that somehwhat "illustrate" LOL how we build our frames. We run a 'reach' from the rear axle to the 'king pin' on at the front. The front end of this reach has a clevis type connection which straddles the front axle.( if that makes any sense at all lol). With this set up the front of the wagon is allowed to pivotside to side while crossing furrows . The clevis also allows the pulling forces to be transferred directly to the axles and thus takes alot of stress off the kingpins assembly. We removed all the springs to help with stability. ( the first one we built we left the springs on the rear and when cornering the wagon would tend to lean uncomfortablly to one side,,,,,, and NOT return to level once the turn was completed !) Its rainning here now but tomorrow Ill snap some more piuctures to give you a better idea how we did things. BTW.. you can thank my Dad for 'illiustration" :-)
