Subject: RE: Cover crops

Been notil for 14 years and using rye cover crops for 5 or 6. Think you want to be careful planting corn into rye, but beans love it. I broadcast about a bushel after fall harvest ahead of next year soybeans. Usually kill it next spring about knee high or less with glyphos. The root mass is great for tilth in notil, and is the best cover crop I know of for erosion. It hasn't caused any extra bug problems for me. Not being a legume, rye won't "fix" nitrogen, but can catch some loose nitrates and release them as the residue breaks down. For me, fall seeded rye has many benefits and has taken notil to another level. We're in east central Missouri, so I'm sure there would be differences for you.
