| Take a look at the tire ground contact area. Certainly the 50" tire will have a larger contact area than th 46" tire for the same width. Likely the tire will handle the load with enough air pressure, but that may be a pressure that ruts a dry field. I don't see my vintage Goodyear Farm Tire Handbook handy so I can't check those numbers.
Its sure that compacting is a factor, but getting 18.4's down 24" spaces is a pain if the tractor width matches the rows, and running over rows that didn't need running over can't help them grow.
