Same situation here in WC IL. Some C/C looks great others will be... very, very bad if it does not rain soon (next week). We are seeing differences between hybrids, with the stronger rooting corns having more root regrowth and standing the stress better. That said, I think you probably got your money out of the soil insecticide, it just can't protect a very large area of the root system. This year the RW corn is really shining as well as the non-RW corn that is planted after RW corn in 2005. The RW corn knocked down the population to the extent that there was very little egg laying and next to no root damage this year. Other fields that were sprayed for beetles last year with Penncap-M are showing reduced root feeding and beetle emergence this year. The fields that were sprayed with Warrior a year ago are another story... train wreck.
If you plan on going back to corn in this field next year and don't want to use RW corn, I'd hammer it with Penncap-M and hope for the best.
