Subject: Re: Question for Illinois corn on corn growers or..........

We grow some 2nd year corn and have been using Aztec as our insecticide. Last year we suffered from lack of rainfall but our best corn was second year corn. It beat all the 1st year corn by a minimun of 20bpa. There was some rootworm damage in it butnot any worse than our 1st year corn, btw which also was treated with the same rate of Aztec. We saw a lot of the beetles working on the tassles but the corn had already polinated so didn't spray any.

As for whether dry weather caused your insecticide to fail, I have had that happen in the past but never saw a significant drop in yields. A seed sgronomist told us that if there was still 1/2" of viable silks left that the ear would pollinate. My advice would be to keep a close eye on that field and be ready to act if / when needed.
