| Get the proper service manual first. Its likely not accessible through the dash, maybe not even with the engine in place. The first step to dash access will require disabling the airbags.
That service manual may show the location off an air filter in the ventilation system. I know some cars have them and the owner's manual for my new to me 2002 Golf doesn't mention it. The Haynes manual calls it an interior air filter, the Bentley manual calls it something else but they show where it is hidden. At 50,000 miles the one in my Golf was plugged and the valleys were more than half full of packed dirt. Didn't flow air much at all.
