| I replaced mine last summer on my 2001 F250. Yes the whole hub assembly has to be replaced. $350 from Carquest auto parts. The locking hub was ruined on mine also.
Special tools??? Seems like there is a snaping ring that holds the locking hub in. Then it just slides off the end of the shaft. Behind that there is another snap ring on the axle. This second snap ring sets inside the hub. Seemed like it was hard to get too and there was a washer or two behind that snap ring. I remember it being really hard to get that "inside" snap ring back on with the washers behind it during reassembly.
Four bolts hold the bearing assembly on. You have to be able to turn the front wheels all the way left, then all the way right to get these four bolts out. Need an impact cause they were TIGHT.
Hope my memory is right and this helped. | |
