Subject: RE: Bin site design question

Alton, Ia
You really haven't given enough information. First, is it worth it to even store? Bins can be a key part of a marketing plan, but they don't prevent poor marketing. (trust me!) Does your local market reward storage? It's gotten expensive, for the bins you are talking figure close to 1.50-2.00 per bushel. Is it the best use of your money?

Then, after you have penciled out that storage is good, now where? How do you move grain? If by tractor and wagons, you may want to put the bins in the direction of your final market. Don't make extra work by hauling it back somewhere someday. If by truck, hauling a extra couple miles might not be so bad. Then it may be more important for drying management. How do you intend to dry? Some methods require checking occasionally, others can be left alone. Who's doing it? How old is your Dad, or what are your other time commitments? Is the cost of hauling outweighed by the cheaper electric? If it's going that direction eventually, it doesn't matter, but if you turn it around at delivery time, you need to double count the hauling then.

Figure out your best setup first. Making a decision without a plan, just because you got a deal on a used leg, will make it the most expensive bargain you have ever seen.
