Subject: RE: Winterizing Pumps

Crawford County, Robinson, Illinois

Back in the day, that is what I did.  I didn't drain, just put in several gallons of used oil, and sprayed until oil came out.  Perhaps it is hard on seals and hoses, but I didn't have any trouble with my Defco pump and Precision SS pickup sprayer.

I have thought about mentioning this several times when the question came up on how to winterize, but the make of the pump and the construction of the seals varies so much, it might not work so good for some people.

Plus, there are some people who would call the EPA if they saw used oil come out of your sprayer.  Personally, I sprayed in the field, and consider the amount so small, that it is infintesimal.  If you were using a tankful, that would be an entirely different matter!
