Subject: Question for Gerald J

Central Texas , Bastrop county
A few weeks ago there was a discussion on this board considering getting power to a motor several hundred feet away from any power lines. the question was how large wires were required to adequately furnish power to the motor in question. In that discussion. you replied that running wires big enough to carry the load would be impractical and a better solution would be to transform 230v to 7200v and use smaller wires to a second transformer to bring the 7200v back to 230v

I have a similar situation which is a 5hp 230v, single phase motor powering a centrifugal water pump. Running amps are about 18 and I would guess the starting amps to be around 40 or 50 . The distance is about 1500 ft.

Questions are: Where can one obtain transformers sized for such duty? And am I correct that at 7200v my smaller wire need only to carry about 1.5 amp?

Thanks in advance
