Subject: RE: help me understand plant tissue test

Berlin, Germany
John,

we do a lot of tissue test in various crops and find it a very good tool in addition to Soil samples. The detailed soil sample gives us a "preview" what can come so we do act on them and the tissue sample is the result how good we did the job and also it takes the factors compaction, temperature and moisture and the varaity in account.
However we do not look too much an absolut numbers but on relations. So look at the rations of N :K; N : S and also how B is in relation to K & Ca. A excess of one has consequently a def. of anouther nutrient as result.
A good done tissue sample is of great help and it helped us to increase plant health considerably. Many fungus and root problems are history in our intensive wheat, canola and also corn crops.
Try to get the book of Prof. Bergmann: Nutritional disorders in plants" of 1992. It is out of sale but you might have success as a 2nd hand version. This book explanins the relationsships between the minerals, the role of each mineral and has a vast section on images on dificient plants.
In the internet you find a version for viewing tissue signs of defficiensies at: www.tll.de/visuplant, Sorry it is just in German.
Have fun and don't let you be discouraged too quick. Most people in Ag don't understand the effect of nutritients and the relationsships. In several farms we where able to cut the pesitisides within one year by 25%, and not sacrificing yield and quality. We will instead have stability in yields at a very high level.
Think about this sentence for a moment: "nutritional disorders are the mother of pest and deseases" and "where a effect is (the desease / bug) there is a cause.". Don't fight the effect but work on the cause.
