Driftless SW Wisconsin | We have seen the "open slot" below the surface in strip till with a knife since the early 1990's. Personally I believe it has more to do with the type and moisture of soils than the type of knife.
When you have heavy clay soils as you describe you can do all sorts of things to close the surface but there is at times an open slot which in striptill is directly under the seed and providing an open path right down to the fertilizer. What is amazing is that even in fall strips that open slot can still be there in the spring - in some soils.
