My understanding is that the Alpace "fleece" market, or whatever you call it, is kind of a cottage industry type thing. I know the one lady around here with them sends the stuff off somewhere to have it spun, then gets it back and makes the garments herself. However, it takes a lot of $50 stocking caps to pay for a $5000-10,000 Alpaca!!!. I really think it's still a breeders market. There's enough excess cash floating around for this thing to last longer than the ostrich/emu/elk/pot bellied pic/ etc/etc did before. Still no underlying market to determine value. It's basically a breeders market. I know they also have electronic scales and weigh the animals regularly and adjust "things" based on that.
