I'd do the same thing, just put one hot wire up on the inside. If the posts and wire is all going to be to close, stick a T post in the ground a foot or so inside of the fence and put an isulator on it. Use HT wire and you only need a T post every 100' or so. Depending on how your current fence is built, it is usually easier to find the right type of insulator to stick on your existing posts. Kencove has a fairly good selection, although the don't have many of the ones that will snap onto a T posts, mostly wood.

Electric is the answer on these small pastures. There are miles and miles of fence here where electric and HT wouldn't work at all, but for around pastures it makes life a lot easier.

I also would just spray with 2, 4-D. If you kill everything in a strip, the only things that will come back are weeds.
