| Can't say as to beef, but we feed our lambs the whole barley. Will feed out around 2000 head this year. We work them up gradually and then they have free choice barley (use round hog feeders with the little lids off-dry climate here) and they have free choice access to one ton bales of alfalfa. They just eat what they want. Gain rate has been over 3/4lb/day to 1.2lb/day.
Studies out of Canada said you get better gains with the whole barley than any process method with less off feed issues. The studies were in one of the recent Shepherd magazines. Also saves cost of grinding/rolling.
