Hi Ed,
I have many fields like the one you described. In addition I have bush plus some waterholes to complicate things. Basically A-B lines simply do not work for me.
Since I am also a programmer I created a program called FarmerGPS. It requires a laptop BUT does not need A-B lines at all. It basically does GPS guidance based on your last pass.
My dad won't go spraying without it and believe me he would never use a system which requires him to do as much strategic planning as you described :-). He clicks "start" which simply records all work to a map file and "stop" when he leaves the field.

So with your field, you would do the headlands as you described. For swath 2 when you go south you may create yourself a North-South guideline which helps you to drive straight south.
There may be one draw-back to not using A-B lines: If you must drive a straight line, your current guidance is only as good as the last pass. As mentioned I have a straight line to help but no A-B lines.

Just my thoughts.
Johannes
