I have my GPS part of my base station mounted on the roof of my 100 year old house that is very solid. I attached an LMR 400 antenna cable on my base stations radio then on an extended pole I have a 5 db gain antenna hooked to the radio. I am using Trimble equipment and I get 6-8 miles from my base station radio and if I use my repeater radio I get 12 miles. As far as mounting on a leg I have been up on legs before and felt them sway in the wind and don’t think this would be a good place for the GPS part of the base station but for the radio it would be perfect just mount the GPS receiver lower on a fixed or more solid object and then attach a LMR 400 cable to your radio and put your antenna as high up on the leg as you can. I only know about Trimble equipment so if you have a different brand check with your supplier to see if you can add an antenna cable and a 5 or 7 db gain antenna higher than your base stations GPS receiver.
