Are you able to bring up the "Save As" dialog box? Does it hang when you try to save it? or does it hang when you try to bring up the "Save As" dialog box? If you can open up the "Save As" dialog box, I suggest you take a look at the format you are trying to save into. Make sure you are saving into the current format...... or for that matter, maybe you want to save into an older version.
I don't know if this is the answer, but it is a thought to try.
