Massachusetts | We been growing little of it each year for a bunch of years. Lots of different ways to do it. The direction we are settling into is a one chop system. Tonnage is better. Feed quality is similar and harvest is quicker and cheaper with less ash in forage. Cut standing sudex at one inch length of cut with a kemper head. Wet forage but won’t have any leaching or butyric acid if cut at that length and ensiled properly. Harvest early enough to establish triticale or whatever winter cereal you want early enough in fall/late summer so that you can get a monster forage harvest the next spring. Google the work of Tom Kilcer for reading on specifics-he’s done a lot on it | |
