Subject: RE: Calving in Lot VS on Pasture

IA
Here's what I'm doing, I only run 70 cows so not a huge amount but it's just me. The cows start late Feb/march. I have them on 25 acres of stalks and let them calve out there. Once they calve I move them to a heavily bedded lot for a few days to a week, they have access to a shed where I have some pens and facilities if I have problems. After a week or so once they are paired up good I have 10 acres of rye seeded down that pairs go on. I have 50 acres of rye seeded down that I'm going to move pairs to once the fence is ready. Hope to keep them on rye until late may then move then to pasture. I hope to be 3/4s done calving once planting starts, if i had better facilities I'd probably move into early February. If I ever add more numbers I'd probably start a fall calving heard to spread some workload out. This is in central Iowa.
