Subject: RE: 17 year old cow

SW OH
My oldest cow will be 14 in May. She was born on the farm, orphaned, and raised by my wife, and named after my wife. She's calved 13 times, twice with twins. She is smaller, 1,100 pounds or so. She is an attention seeking pet. When I walk among my herd of 25 she makes a B line for me. She wants her back scratched between her pin bones in just the right spot. If I'm not in the right spot she will move till my hand is in the right spot. If I scratch any other cow she will beat them up and punish me as well. My vet has been telling me for 2 years she needs to go to McDonald's.

If I sort out a calf to wean or sell the herd gets riled up and she is the lead den mother. She is always in everybody else's business. She causes more ruckus than any of my other cows. But, when she has a calf of her own, I'm the devil she is out to kill if I get within 40 feet of her calf. After the calf is 10 days or so old, I can do anything I want to her calf, as long as I scratch her in that 1,particular spot.

Cows have a personality as well as an attitude.
