Faunsdale, AL | Neighbor has contaminated the hydraulic system with DEF on his track skid steer. New machine.
Parts guy at dealership says it has 18 gallons listed as capacity but we have gotten less than 7 or 8 drained. Getting new filters (there’s a spin on filter behind seat when cab is flipped up and a return filter in the hydraulic tank). There’s also a suction strainer that’s a very fine screen that doesn’t appear to have anything on it, so we’re leaving that alone.
Any suggestions or experience cleaning up one of these? He will have $600 in a single set of filters and 20 gallons of oil, but we won’t get more than about a third of the oil changed at one time so I’m sure filters will be quickly recontaminated as soon as it starts up. It’s possible the return filter won’t have a paper element that will absorb the water and urea solution but I bet the spin-on filter does.
Good news is the oil seems to be picking the contamination up and keeping it in an emulsion that appears to be providing good lubrication still. No clumps, chunks of slime or gunk after a few minutes run time and then sitting overnight. I’m sure it’s not doing any of the internal components any favors but doesn’t seem like it would be immediately harmful. Unfortunately I’m sure there was a few seconds when the pump picked up a high % of DEF and sent it to the system before it was mixed in so well.
