Subject: RE: Old Kewanee Elevator

NW Iowa
220 bushels in 15-20 minutes might have been about right back in the day but today we are running an average 800-1000 bushels in 20 minutes. That's with an auger. I grew up with an old Kewanee built in the late 40's. It had the light weight chain so we couldn't run more than three or four ears of corn per flight. With oats we would run it so each flight was about 80% full. We hauled oats in 150 bushel wagons but it's been so long ago I don't remember how long it took to empty a wagon. We were keeping up with either a 12A Deere combine or a Case A6 so we didn't have to hurry. The elevator was powered by a 35 john Deere A belted to a Stanhoist speed jack. Now I'm getting nostalgic.
