Subject: 8850 Deere 4wd losing engine oil

NW KS/ SC ID
Hey all,

I have a friend who is looking at a 8850 Deere, has had limited use the past decade (retired farmer) but has been ran a little bit each year.

Recently it was roaded to my friends place, which is probably the hardest its worked in a while. oil was full when it left.

when he went to try it out, he noticed it was low on oil. topped it off, IIRC 1.5 gallons.

roaded it 5 miles to a field, tried it out for an hour. parked, checked oil again, back low again, 1.5 gallons.

No evidence of oil being burned off, no oil in cooling system. no blowby, seems to be a healthy engine.

Where else can oil go on a 50 series 4wd? If the rear main seal leaks, does it get picked up by the hydraulic system for the wet clutch?

If this is the case, why didnt it leak earlier? is it possible that there is a clogged vent putting the clutch housing under vacuum?

Any insight appreciated,
thanks!
