I thought the same about coyotes, and I've watched coyotes walk amongst the herd, with calves, and the mommas will barely glance at them. Last spring I had a week old calf with a broken jaw. A few days later I watched a coyote, in the middle of the day and 100 yards from the house, run into the pasture and tackle a less than week old calf. This calf got up with only a ripped ear, but I'm pretty confident the calf with a broken jaw was the result of a coyote(s) getting the herd worked up and the calf getting kicked. Watching the herd react, the calves have a higher chance of injury from the other cows being startled, or fighting back, than the actual coyotes themselves.
