No annual fee to use Trimble if you're running WAAS, a free US Government supplied correction.
You can get a Trimble EZ-Guide 500 with an assisted steering system called EZ-Steer pretty cheap. It's not as good as a fully integrated system, but I think it's what most of us long time users started out with, and it did the job well at the time.
If you're a Deere guy, you can get a StarFire 3000 Receiver, and a 2600 Display pretty reasonable as well. For another $2000, an ATU wheel that mounts to your steering wheel will steer the tractor.
