SE Iowa | Had 3 in a row, 87,88,89. Burned up as much as drought as it was 100 degree days and sw wind and did not cool off at night, still 90 degrees at 10 p.m. Also had drought in 77 that was crazy hot. Got married that July 30th and had 9 inches of rain while on honeymoon. Drown out in 1993 and another drought in 2012. Rain always came to save the beans as I have never collected ins on beans. This spring is a repeat of last spring. Lawn is browning, no rain for 26 days now, and 10 day is a zero as of right now. Got field goaled by rain on May 6th as neighbors to nw and se got a heavy one. Things look great right now though, just like last year, good stands, roots going down but corn was very short statured last year due to no rain and was 25 bu below aph. Rain after Labor Day saved the crop, probably added 35 bu to corn and 25 bu to beans just on kernel size alone. Corn will be short again. Brown lawn is a direct correlation to reduced yield in summer, not so much this early with good subsoil moisture. Brown lawn at tassel is a reduction every year here. | |
