There’s ways of minimizing risk of killing dog along with worms, usually keeping in kennel and minimizing activity as much as possible. If you can’t confine the dog yourself or let the vet do it, sometimes it’s simpler to put a dog that’s coping with its current worm burden on preventative to stop it getting more and assume the worms will die of old age one at a time before they cause serious trouble.
This doesn’t always work because it can be just a guess how many worms may still be “in the pipeline” and will mature later and possibly increase the symptoms of a dog that was coping with what it had when the plan was made.
Also depends on the activity level and plans for the dog. Just a companion around the house is different from a field trial dog etc.
Dead worms are a bad thing for the lungs short term. Live worms are a bad thing for heart and lungs long term and they don’t live forever, so they can become dead worms at any time. | |
