I think the treatment type varies with the load and maturity of heartworms. One of my dogs had them and the vet prescribed Ivermectin daily for a week or so, but we caught it early. Some dog breeds are sensitive to Ivermectin, and as well if the heartworm load is heavy, they can cause blockages when they die.
