Every dollar you save towards your kids college fund thats in an institution with records is a dollar they will NOT receive in scholarship/grants/etc.Coming from one who had 3 kids go thru top tier colleges it is actually become necessary (unless you are loaded) to keep this savings to help out elsewhere.
get a sample FASFA form and work thru the numbers.If you are in Ag the main farm is not included in assets to be borrowed against.At least a couple years ago.
Say you are not a farmer and have a house worth 400k,owe 300k.You then will need to borrow that equity(100K$) for your child.Im not kidding here.It is not geared to help out the middle class at all.
The rules may change but the rule of you paying thru the nose wont.IMO.
A broke farmer gets the best education benefit for his kids.I was broke,,hehehhe maybe still,,,not broken though....yet,,hehehe
