Subject: Alfalfa vs grass hay

East Central Illinois
Have a small cow-calf herd, and have in the last couple years switched to round bales, and have a few small acre patches and was wondering about economics of grass hay vs alfalfa. If you were to go for simply volume, which would yield more per acre? Also, cows just love alfalfa, so if I give them a round bale of alfalfa, will it last longer than a round bale of hay? Are they getting more nutrients so they get full faster, or is it like a pile of sweets, where they would eat as much as they can, as fast as they can? I typically bale roadsides and patches that have small amounts of clover and alfalfa mixed in with lots of grass. Thanks in advance!
