Subject: Hay moisture testers-do you trust them?

Croswell, Michigan
I bought this years ago. The dealer that sold it to me said they were calibrated for pure alfalfa and that I needed to add 1% for every 10% grass in the mix. Using that theory I have never baled a dry bale since I’ve owned this thing. Also, I’ve noticed even a couple of hours after baling the moisture reading will start to go up as the bale sweats .

We have hay on the ground that was cut Friday, tedded yesterday. I felt it at 1 o’clock and I thought man this feels dry. We baled 4-500 bales and now I’m second guessing myself. Pulled the tester out and get readings from 13% to 22% in bales side by side. I’m fairly confident that I’m okay but it still ticks me off that I can’t get a reading I have faith in.
