You are so right.
My Dad served in WW2. Older brother in Vietnam. Changed their lives forever.
Dad wasn’t able to come back to the farm he left. Had to start over in his mid 30’s. That changed his future and likely the future of his family forever.
Brother never was the same after Vietnam. Married a California girl while in the service. She was poison to him and to our family. Things most likely would have been much different had he been able to stay home during those years.
So yes, a soldier doesn’t have to die in combat to have their life taken away.
