GM played around with v10's very briefly in the mid-2000's. Enough so that there's a couple factory-built blocks, cranks, and heads in existence today.
I was just looking at the numbers on their 6.6L L8T engine. If that one were converted to a v10, it would displace 8.2 liters, and produce 500 hp and 580 lb/ft of torque. That's not quite diesel torque, but it's easily competitive, and it would be far more than Ford's 7.3 is producing.
Would a v10 fit in these modern 3/4-ton engine bays? If so, it would be logical for GM to go that route instead of developing a new big block, if they feel that gas-alternatives to diesel are worth having.
