Subject: RE: Farmall h as a first tractor

An H is a good low cost tractor. Here appropriate attachments bring iron price. They are getting less common.
It is not useful on a full scale commercial farm, except for mowing etc. However, with limited funds, and for his immediate purpose, it is probably a viable option.
If you can find one with an M&W hand clutch it will be a great baler tractor. The kit can probably still be bought.
I baled a lot of hay with one without live pto, so it can be done.
If you are going to overhaul the engine any way, put high compression pistons in it. We had one pushing 40 hp. That allows it to run a small auger. Or to travel well down the road over hills.
If you go that route a 12 volt system will be a great help. One can use the same starter but must change the lights and put on an alternator.
One can just go to 8 volts and keep the generator.
We had one with a Tractor Supply three point. It actually worked pretty well.
I do not know what type of farming you are planning on, so this set up may work well and be low cost, or at least a little cost at at time.
Just remember. An H has low pressure hydraulics, I believe,700 psi and a few gallons per minute. You will need bigger cylinders for the same load. If one goes to a D17 Allis or something along those lines hydraulic pressure is 1800 or so.
By 1975 most tractors run 2850 psi.
None of that matters if you are just going to mow rake and bale with it. It will pull a small single gang disc just fine.
If one is going to disc or plow, an M may work better.
If you have not spotted one yet, one with power steering is nice, especially if you get an M or a loader.
And yes, I have done the loader with no power steering also. It can be done.
