That is an engine worth preserving.

They just don't make them like that anymore.

Do yourself a favor and buy a high-quality capillary-tube temperature gauge (Stewart Warner or Murphy).

Test the gauge before you install it using a pan of hot water and a kitchen thermometer.

While you are at it, install a high quality oil pressure gauge, one that uses a pressure line to the gauge.

If the oil pressure is up and the temperature is down, that engine will run forever.
