S Illinois | Most soils at least in IL hold 5-12”(south to north) of usable root zone moisture. Not very often there isn’t a little in the tank come Sept so figure 4-10” of storage to be filled entering Oct. Unfortunately as soon as at field capacity additional moisture stunts root growth and has to run off. Nothing good with regards to crop growth happens above field capacity. Better to be on the dry side than wet. It would be interesting to trade precipitation averages. | |
