Either a coon or possum could probably get up to the attic. If you have a dog proof coon trap, I'd use a marshmallow on the trigger, one on top, and weld the trap to a piece of steel big enough a coon can't move it from the center of the floor, it would be a disaster to have a mad coon able to move. Could be a rat or chipmunk also, they sound much bigger when running around the rafters.
