One local processor, not my primary, said they had openings over the summer but were booked up for fall. I presume some folks are planning on grazing steers over the summer then processing in the fall rather than feed through the winter. Personally I've sold more yearlings at the sale barn this winter and spring than I have in years. If I can get $2.25+ live weight that's like selling at $3.50 hanging which is more than I've been charging ($3.00) for wholes or halves and getting close to what mine bring by the pound except a lot less work. Demand for freezer beef is strong. I just need to decide how much work I want to do. Maybe need to raise my retail prices, but hate to make a big jump when selling to long time customers. |
