NW Missouri | 8 miles is no big deal. I'm not that big a farmer, but we go 7 miles in one direction and 30 in another. If you're gonna do custom work, you might as well get used to having some road time. But it definitely can lead to rental or buying opportunities down the road.
Rates must be higher in IL. $45 to plant sounds nuts to me - unless it includes tillage or something. $25 for planting seems like plenty. In good running, I can cover 10 acres an hour with an 8/15 planter, which would be $250 per hour. I have been charging $36 for combining. Rates are less than that for family. Nobody rolls here so don't know what that would be worth.
