St Henry Indiana | One word to really help get the best results possible. Rock. The more rock you put under and especially behind the wall the better. When we were installing retaining walls more we typically followed the rough guideline of a foot or more of rock behind the wall for every foot of wall height. Drainage is key as well and the rock helps as well as cushions the pressure from the dirt on the back of the wall. Usually for a 4ft wall we’d do a foot and a half or 2 foot deep footer with packing stone compacted for the base, the wall, a 4-6” tile laying along the bottom of the backside of the wall, then backfill with finer 11’s or so gravel up to about a foot from the top and 3-4 feet thick if room allows.
